My vote goes to Jeryl Sasser. NBA First round pick. Lots of other great choices out there including Shake.

I would second Gene Phillips. Also remember Maxie Williams but think he was more of a show-man than a big scorer.

Gene Phillips was a great shooting guard but did other things well.

Of the guys I saw play, I will have to go with Phillips. Can only imagine what he would have done with a three point shot because he had tremendous range with what was almost a set shot. I always thought Sasser and Q were very similar players...really good but not as good a collegiate 2 guard as Phillips. Sterling Brown was pretty darn good, too but overall Phillips I have to go with Phillips.

While Sasser is SMU's all-time leading scorer, he edged Phillips out by 60 points and it took Sasser 4 years to accumulate his total whereas Phillips played only 3 years. Sasser needed 145 more FG attempts to outscore Phillips over his career. Phillips could light it up and did most nights. He still has the single game scoring record of 51 points, he has 12 of the 18 highest single game totals, he scored 30 or more points 13 times and he was also a great rebounder. He lead the team 2 of his 3 years in rebounding and had 15 double/doubles. I remember he was like an elastic man on the baseline and under the boards. Some of the moves he made were ridiculous.

For at least one game against Florida (which I think was #3 at the time), Todd Alexander was absolutely amazing. Florida had 3 future NBA guys on the roster, and Alexander shot the lights out in the upset.

Gene Phillips without a doubt. If there was video available from his era this topic would never come up. Freshmen have been eligible since the 72-73 season. In the almost 50 years since, only one player has had more career points that Phillips, taking four years. And Phillips didn't have the benefit of AAU in the high school off season.

I'm still angry that Koncak went into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame before G. Phillips and I.T.

... and there was no three-point line when Phillips played.
