SMU Suffers Overtime Loss To Texas State At Home

DALLAS (SMU) – In the first overtime game since March 17, 2017, and only the second during the Travis Mays tenure as head coach, SMU lost 74-70 at home to Texas State.

Kayla White led the team with 18 points. Freshman Rhyle McKinney finished with 10 points, and Paige Bayliss scored nine points with nine rebounds. Transfer Jahnaria Brown scored seven with seven rebounds, and Reagan Bradley tallied nine points with four assists.

Prior to the game, the team knelt in unison against racism and social injustice. The team issued a statement that was read over the public address system, stating:

"We matter because our lives are valuable and we have a right to live free of discrimination. We are student-athletes with unique identities that should be respected and valued on and off the court. Our voices matter, and we have the right to speak up about injustices we face in this country. We have the power to point out the inequities that harm us. I Matter. You Matter. We Matter. Black Lives Matter."

SMU (0-2) led for 37:37 to just 3:41 for Texas State (1-1), and the Mustangs did not trail in regulation. The Bobcats erased an eight-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter, with SMU leading 56-48 to start the period. Texas State tied the game, 66-66, with just 11 seconds left. Bradley had a chance at the horn, but the shot did not fall.

Bradley started the scoring in the overtime period, giving SMU a 68-66 lead just 15 seconds into the extra time. However, by the time McKinney hit the second SMU basket in overtime with just two seconds left, the game had been decided. Texas State outscored the Mustangs 8-4 for the win.

SMU plays at Oklahoma State Monday at 6:30 p.m. before returning to Moody Coliseum Wednesday to play Arkansas at 7 p.m.

Seems like a fireable offense, but Mays has proven to be immune to those.

SMU Women's basketball blocked me on Twitter. I will actively cheer against them every game so this is fantastic news!!! I hope we have a perfect seasons i.e. 0-however many games we play. Mays is a loser and SMU women's basketball is a trash program.

I watched the second half of the game (and OT). It was a terrible collapse against a significantly worse team. How Turner, Hart, et al. can look at that and not see the need for a change is mind-boggling.

“Hart hired Rob Evans to mentor the coach and also be available for other coaches. And he certainly, in his about 18 months with us, has been helpful as a non-coaching coach, just as a mentor to the coaches, to be helpful. But his primary focus, 90 percent of his time, has been in working with and advising Coach Mays.”

Extra resources spent to advise and manage Mays.

It seems like the admin doesn’t want to buy him out or spend more than they need to on non-revenue sports.

He won 19 games in his first year, with players he inherited, and won 21 in the next 2 years combined. Does anyone see any reason to believe he'll start trending up again?

How can Turner with a straight face justify hiring a "mentor" to control and advise a coach on proper conduct!? Another SMU sports absurdity.

Just make Evans the coach. We know he's a far better coach, and Evans would cost less than May's AND Evans.
