Women's basketball falls at Oklahoma State, 75-63

Freshmen Make Mark In Loss At Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team showed improvement in a 75-63 loss at Oklahoma State Monday night. Freshman Rhyle McKinney scored a team-high 13 points, and all three freshmen made shots from outside the arc.

"We knew this would be a difficult game, but I see our young players growing up in front of our eyes," head coach Travis Mays explained after the game. "I think one key is that we are doing better with turnovers. Tonight, we got dominated in the paint, and we have to do a better job on defense."

In addition to McKinney, Jayla Brooks scored eight points in her first game, knocking down a pair of 3's. Tamia Jones added a trey to finish with five points. Kayla White scored 12 points, going 4-for-7 from the field and 2-for-3 from outside the arc.

The junior set the tone, as SMU finished the first quarter with a 15-11 advantage with seven points from White in the period. Oklahoma State answered with 20 points in the second quarter for a 31-29 lead at halftime. Another six-point advantage, 26-20 in the third quarter, allowed the Cowgirls to start pulling away. Oklahoma State's size aided in the as the Cowgirls scored 14 of 42 paint points in the third quarter.

In all, SMU made 8-of-18 3-point attempts, 44.4 percent, while OSU shot 52.7 percent from the field, 29-of-55.

The Mustangs return home to host No. 13 Arkansas in Moody Coliseum Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
