From SMUMustangs.com:

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team fought until the end against an Oklahoma team that entered the contest receiving votes in the AP Top 25 Poll and had just one loss, a five-point defeat to No. 9 Oregon. Unfortunately, the Mustangs could not recover from a first-quarter deficit and lost by 12, 84-72, in Moody Coliseum Tuesday night.

Savannah Wilkinson scored a career-high 24 points, and Kayla White finished with 20 points, two fewer than her career-high 22, reaching 20 for the third time in her career. White also led the team with eight rebounds. Leading scorer Sydne Wiggins was limited to three points, but posted a career-high seven assists to lead the Mustangs.

SMU (3-4) outscored Oklahoma by seven over the last three quarters, forcing the Sooners (6-1) into a season-high 26 turnovers. SMU converted the turnovers into 28 points, while committing just 13 turnovers with five in the first quarter.

Trailing by 19 after the first quarter, 28-9, SMU battled, winning the second quarter 24-15 to cut the lead to 10 at halftime. The Mustangs went 10-for-21 shooting over the second 10 minutes, while holding Oklahoma scoreless from outside the arc (0-for-7). The Sooners ranked fourth in the NCAA entering the contest with 87.7 points per game, but were limited to just 15 in the second quarter, which saw SMU force eight turnovers.

SMU matched the Sooners out of the lockerroom in the third quarter as each team scored 18 points, with Oklahoma hitting a 3-point buzzer beater to end the quarter. SMU pulled within five with 3:32 left in the third when Kayla White hit a pair of free throws. The lead was seven when Wiggins pulled down a defensive rebound with 29 seconds on the clock, allowing for SMU to hold for the last shot. However, Wiggins long-range 2 rattled out and Oklahoma pushed the ball up the floor just in time to beat the horn, making it a 10-point advantage going to the fourth quarter.

The Sooners stretched the lead back to as many as 18, 77-59 with 4:17 to play, but the Mustangs answered again. SMU outscored Oklahoma by six over the final stretch to end the game trailing by just 12.

The Mustangs play at North Texas Friday night at 7 p.m. in Denton, Texas. The road game is SMU's fourth in the last five contests.
