It breaks my heart to see Larry Brown coaching for Memphis playing Ole Miss. He should still be our coach.

If he had only told the truth.

NO- if only the university had backed him up with some legal assistance. they just hung him out to dry.

So the message is "it's OK to cheat and we'll help you avoid getting caught"?

Interesting.

stupid reply. no. most schools help when there is an issue. we have a history of turning our backs on our coaches/supporters.
do not advocate cheating ( in spite of the fact most schools do cheat) but IMO if he had legal advice our penalty would have been a lot less.

Thanks. I respect your opinion, too.
Another approach: don't cheat.

No doubt that mistakes were made, but how often does SMU have a chance to land a HOF coach universally considered one of the top 10 all time in his field? SMU had that and let it get away. Meanwhile, we can't even hold on to mediocre coaches in football that lead us to 6th place finishes in league play all while our conference mates manage to retain coaches that lead them to conference championships or at least championship game appearances.

Nah. He only stays 3-4 years at any stop. We knew that going in. Thus Jank as head coach in waiting.

And remember Brown picked Jank.

And remember Jank brought one of the best PGs in SMU's history

Brown has a LONG record of bouncing around. Those expecting him to stay at SMU for an extended length of time had their eyes closed and were trying to ignore an established 50+ year history.

No doubt, but he could have stayed an extra year or two. The longer he stayed the better off we would have been.

I feel like the SMU offer to Brown was fair. We probably should have fired him for landing us back on probation. SMU tried to walk the fine line between retaining Brown despite the probation but also sending a message that we at least attempted to address the NCAA findings.

I think Brown just used it as an excuse to bolt, with the probation and the limited scholarships, he was going to struggle just like Jank did.

Its his MO to have early success, get his team put on probation, then leave.

I am not sure why anyone is surprised or blames SMU for it. He would have struggled under the sanctions if he stayed and that is the main reason he left.

Agreed completely. That’s what happened. His work was complete. Heck, I’m like that as an employee. I’m a hired hand to right the ship. Then I take off for my next salvation project. Being in one place bores me.

It's rare these days for anyone to spend a career as an employee of any one company/organization. I had to go back and count to realize I worked for 6 different organizations and lived in 15 different apartments and homes in 8 different cities over a 40 year career. Staying in one place was clearly not for me, but I do miss having season tickets and being able to attend SMU football and bball games. I just hope our guys can beat Memphis and Coach Brown when they come to Dallas and certainly hope Moody will be packed for that game.
