SMU Defeats Memphis In Conference Opener, 63-44

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team defeated Memphis 63-44 in its first American Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

The Mustangs started both the first and second quarters with 11-1 runs, taking a 32-18 lead at halftime. The Mustangs scored 25 points in the third quarter, essentially sealing the victory, holding a 22-point advantage with 10 minutes left to play. SMU stretched its lead to as many as 25 in the second half and never trailed in the game, improving to 7-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Savannah Wilkinson and Jasmine Smith both recorded double-doubles, and Reagan Bradley matched her career-high with 18 points. For Wilkinson, the 16-point, 12-rebound performance was her ninth of the season. Smith scored 10 points with a career-high 12 rebounds for her fourth career double-double and the first at SMU. The point guard also had seven assists.

SMU's defense was locked in from the time the plane landed, holding Memphis scoreless from the field for nearly six minutes to start the contest. The Tigers (9-4, 0-2 AAC) managed just 21.4 percent shooting from the field, a season-low for a team that shoots just under 40 percent for the season.

Playing just over two hours from her hometown of Little Rock, Ark., Bradley was nearly percent on the offensive end of the floor. She made 3-of-4 3-point attempts, was 3-for-3 at the free-throw line and shot 66.7 percent overall.

Sydne Wiggins returned after missing time due to Covid protocols and scored 14 points, giving the Mustangs four players in double figures for just the second time this season, with four players scoring at least 10 in the 79-53 win at TCU.

The Mustangs return home to host ECU on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Moody Coliseum. The game, originally scheduled for Jan. 1, is the first of three straight home games for SMU.

Looks like we got really good coach for the women’s team!
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

First game into the conference schedule and we already outperformed last season's team. What a difference a great coach makes.
