GAME THREAD: MBB vs Houston

Postby mustangxc » Wed Feb 09, 2022 8:33 am

SMU (16-5, 7-2 American) vs No. 6/7 Houston (20-2, 9-0 American)
Moody Coliseum – Dallas, Texas
February 9, 2022 – 6 p.m. CT
TV: ESPN2

THE SERIES VS. HOUSTON (33-55) (31-55+)

This is by far the most important game of the season. This is our only chance to boost our resume at home and one of two opportunities for an NCAA resume boosting win, with the other being in Houston. Win this game and we are on the right side of the bubble. Lose it and we are practically eliminated. I would go as far as saying this is the most important game of Jankovich's career. Win this game and we end up extending his contract, lose it and he should be let go at the end of the season. He wanted it this way by scheduling the weakest possible opponents in the non-conference season. This game is also a litmus test for Hart. If he can't manage a sellout for this game, the single most important home game since 2017, he needs his walking papers too! They both asked for this so it's time for them to step up to the plate. I hope we win. We've been mediocre for far too long. To make matters worse, TCU has won several of these games already and this is our lone opportunity.

There are plenty of tickets available.

Guards are slim for UH with Walker not practicing Monday and Sasser/Mark already out for the season. Can the Ponies neutralize the Coogs’ height advantage? Looking at Marcus Weathers.

Only chance this SMU team has is to rain threes on Houston tonight and that means everyone being "on". After watching Houston beat Cincinnati by 22 in Cincy, I have low expectations for tonight and will try not to be bitterly disappointed if our guys get whipped, but I agree this is the kind of game that can make or break our guys' season.

I cannot believe Houston is only favored by 6 1/2 points!
Long live Inez Perez!

Very true statement, we need the threes to drop tonight, no one can be cold. We should also play zone and force Houston to shoot from outside and hope they are ice cold.

Other than that, we got this! :)
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

Ponies are playing with house money. Nobody expects SMU to win, so hopefully the guys come out relaxed and shoot the lights out

Why would you wear red to the Houston game? Go Blue.

I disagree. This is by far the most important game of the season by design (that's what happens when you schedule the weakest collection of opponents in non-conference play). It is a must win game. As I said earlier, probably the most important game of the last 5 seasons and that is no hyperbole. These are all Jankovich's players, there are no sanctions, we really have not suffered from COVID/injuries, there are no excuses. Win or win! We have the horses, time to get it done!

In the two UH losses and the OT game vs. Hofstra, each team had greater than 50% shooting inside the arc. Hofstra was 17-31 inside the arc while Cinci was just 14-33. All three teams had more assists than turnovers.

That said, SMU had 15 turnovers to 10 assists vs. Temple but outrebounded the Owls by 10. Temple shot just 35% overall and was 7-15 at the FT line.

Cool.

Houston will probably be black anyway.

Go Ponies!
