Marcus Weathers Earns Second American Athletic Conference Player Of The Week Honor

IRVING, Texas (SMU/American Athletic Conference) – Marcus Weathers was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is his second honor in the past three weeks. The Mustangs are 18-5 overall and tied for first in the American Athletic Conference at 9-2.

Weathers averaged 15.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 10-for-22 from the field, 3-of-7 on threes and 8-of-12 on free throws. He had 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the 85-83 victory over then-No. 6 Houston on Wednesday. He followed it up with 11 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes in the 80-66 win at East Carolina on Saturday.

For the season, Weathers is averaging 12.1 points (15th AAC), 7.0 rebounds (2nd AAC), 1.9 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.7 blocks. He is hitting 54.4% on field goals, 39.5% on 3-pointers (15-38) and 74.2% at the free-throw line (13th AAC). He is second in The American with four double-doubles, sixth in the AAC averaging 2.1 offensive rebounds and fourth in the league with 4.9 defensive rebounds per game.

This is the fifth AAC Player of the Week award for the Mustangs this season. That is the most AAC Player of the Week honors for SMU in a season, surpassing the four honors (Semi Ojeleye 2, Sterling Brown 2) in 2016-17. Kendric Davis has taken home the honor three times in 2021-22. Davis has been on the 2021-22 Naismith Trophy Midseason Team, Wooden Award Watch List, Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award Watch List, Lute Olson National Player of the Year Watch List and was a unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference First-Team selection.

The Mustangs are receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll. SMU has won 15 of its last 17 overall, and has a 12-0 record at Moody Coliseum this season. The Mustangs play at Temple on Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT before a home game against Memphis Sunday at 2 p.m. For tickets and other game information, visit SMUMustangs.com/gameday.

Congratulations to Marcus. He has found his place on the court for this team and should be first team all conference if he is half as impressive from here on out. Love seeing Marcus and Michal play together and they are a great team at the press conferences as well.

He still reminds me of Markus Kennedy. He’s old Big East kind of tough.

He's better. If he were as big as Kennedy, he would be headed to the draft. He and his brother have been great additions.

Maybe, but Markus was four inches taller, 20 pounds heavier. He was AAC sixth man of the year, no. 8 at SMU in career blocked shots, no. 9 in career field goal percentage, no. 11 in season steals, no.16 in career steals per game, no. 19 in season rebounds, no. 20 in career steals, no. 21 in career rebounds. And Markus recorded 1,003 career points.

Marcus Weathers reminds me more of Reggie Franklin...guard skills in a big body. Markus Kennedy always reminded me of Terry Williams who played on the Butch Moore lead teams in the mid 80's. Big body guy with low post skills
