Michael Weathers Named American Athletic Conference Player Of The Week
IRVING, Texas (SMU/American Athletic Conference) – Michael Weathers was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. He is the third Mustang to earn the honor this season, joining Kendric Davis (three times) and Marcus Weathers (twice). The Mustangs are 22-7 overall and the No. 2 seed in the Air Force Reserve AAC Championship after going 13-4 in league play.
Michael Weathers averaged 17.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocked shot while shooting 10-of-19 from the field, 3-of-4 from three and 12-of-14 on free throws. In the 76-71 win over Cincinnati, he had 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds as he recorded his first double-double of the season. He followed it with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists in the 74-68 victory against Tulane on senior day. He becomes the tenth Mustang to earn AAC Player of the Week.
For the season, he is averaging 10.6 points, 5.7 rebounds (13th AAC), 2.3 assists, 1.6 steals (11th AAC) and 1.3 blocks (6th AAC). He is hitting 46.2% on field goals, 41.0% on 3-pointers and 78.9% at the free-throw line (9th AAC).
This is the sixth AAC Player of the Week award for the Mustangs this season. That extends the program record for the most AAC Player of the Week honors in a season (was four in 2016-17). Davis has taken home the honor three times in 2021-22, and five total times in his career. He has also earned seven AAC Weekly Honor Roll appearances this season. Davis has been on the 2021-22 Naismith Trophy Midseason Team, Wooden Award Watch List, Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award Watch List, Lute Olson National Player of the Year Watch List and was a unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference First-Team selection. Marcus Weathers was selected AAC Player of the Week on Jan. 31 and Feb. 14.
SMU has won 19 of its last 23 overall, and recorded a 16-0 record at Moody Coliseum this season. The No. 2 seed Mustangs will play No. 7 seed Wichita State or No. 10 seed Tulsa in the AAC quarterfinal round on Friday at 6 p.m. at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
