Women's basketball crushes Alabama State in opener, 76-39

Mustangs Win Big In Opener

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU cruised to a 76-39 win over Alabama State on opening night at Moody Coliseum.

Savannah Wilkinson posted a double-double, with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Chantae Embry led all scorers, with 16 points in her SMU debut.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 20-4 advantage after one quarter. They scored 12 of the first 14 points to grab a double-digit lead. ASU trimmed it to eight on a jumper from Jayla Crawford with 3:58 remaining in period. Paige Bayliss finished in the paint and spurred an 8-0 run to conclude the stanza.

SMU increased its lead to 26 at the intermission, outscoring the Lady Hornets 22-12 in the second period. After converting 4 of 8 from three-point range, the
Mustangs converted 9 of 17 from the field, with every attempt inside the arc.

Despite pulling her starters midway through the third quarter, SMU continued to grow its margin over the final 20 minutes of action. They outscored Alabama State 34-27 in the second half, matching their largest margin of victory in seven years. TK Pitts pushed the Mustangs out to their largest gap, at 72-34, when she out-sprinted everyone down the court, turning a steal into an easy deuce.

TEAM RECORDS AND SERIES NOTES
This was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
The 37-point margin of victory matched the largest since SMU defeated Northwestern State 74-36, Nov. 15, 2015.
The Mustangs defeated Oral Roberts 81-44, Nov. 17, 2021.
SMU improved to 8-2 in its last 10 opening games, including an 8-2 mark in home openers.
The Mustangs converted 46.8% (29-62), while holding ASU to 26.4% (14-53).
From three-point range, SMU hit 7 of 18 (.38.9%), while the Lady Hornets went 2 of 16 (12.5%)
SMU dominated inside, outscored ASU 40-12 in the paint and held a 53-24 rebounding edge.
The Mustangs distributed 21 assists on 29 baskets, while the Lady Hornets had six on 14 buckets.
A quartet of true freshmen made their collegiate debut for SMU.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Sophomore F Chantae Embry posted 16 points, nine boards and three assists.
The transfer from Texas Tech established career-highs in each category.
Senior F Savannah Wilkinson tallied 12 points on 6 of 10 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds.
She recorded her 15th double-double, all at SMU.
Junior G Tamia Jones finished with nine points, two boards and two blocks.
Freshmen G TK Pitts netted 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in her collegiate debut.
Sophomore transfer C Jessica Peterson notched 10 points and eight rebounds.
She set a career high in points and equaled the most boards in her career.
Freshman G Ella Brow totaled four points in her initial appearance at the college level.
Freshman G Jiya Perry collected four rebounds in her college debut.
Freshman C Zoe Manning blocked a shot and snagged a board in her first collegiate action.
