Women's basketball tops Cal 70-56 to win B.A.R Invitational

BERKELEY, Calif. – SMU defeated California at Haas Pavilion winning the Raising the B.A.R Invitational Sunday. The Mustangs won their six straight, the longest win streak in nine seasons.

SMU improved to 7-2 on the season, while the Golden Bears dropped to 6-2, their first loss in six games. This is the first win over a Pac-12 team since Dec. 19, 2015, a 56-48 result over Arizona at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan.

Jasmine Smith earned Most Valuable Player honors. Savannah Wilkinson and Tamia Jones joined Smith on the all-tournament team.

Tamia Jones led the Mustangs with a career-high 17 points. Smith and Wilkinson tallied 17 each, while Chantae Embry netted 13.

Facing their largest deficit of the tournament at 42-37, with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter. The Mustangs erased the gap with five points on one trip down the floor. Chantae Embry drew a foul during a free-throw when Savannah Wilkinson completed a 3-point play. With her team in the bonus, Embry stepped to the stripe burying both attempts.

Ella Brow drove the paint and finished off the glass, giving SMU a 44-42 cushion. After a triple by Cal evened the score for the last time, Jasmine Smith converted two at the free-throw line teams, nudging the Mustangs in front for good.

SMU outscored the Bears 38-24 in the final half after finishing the opening 20 deadlocked at 32-32.

After a Cal bucket opened the scoring, the Mustangs ran off 11 straight and grabbing their largest lead of the half at nine. The Bears responded with the first seven points of the second quarter, retaking the advantage at 21-19.

Despite the stats mirroring each other, the teams went about it differently. SMU hit 50% percent of its field-goal attempts, including 1 of 2 occurring from behind the arc. The Golden Bears attempted nine of their 34 shots from deep, draining three.
