HOUSTON – SMU suffered a 60-44 setback against Houston at the Fertitta Center Friday in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Chantae Embry recorded her second-career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Returning from an injury that sidelined her for five weeks, TK Pitts accounted for four points and three steals. Jiya Perry made her first-career start, marking the first time the Mustangs (9-4, 0-1 AAC) starting five included a pair of freshmen since Head Coach Toyelle Wilson arrived on the Hilltop.

After a slow start mired the Mustangs in a 13-7 hole, the Cougars nudged the margin out to double-digits with five minutes remaining before halftime. Embry completed a 3-point play and Reagan Bradley hit 1-of-2 at the line to get SMU within two possessions with 3:34 on the clock. After four straight by the home team, Bradley put back a miss. Pitts turned a steal into a layup and Perry cut the margin to five with 45 seconds before intermission, but Houston answered. The Cougars converted a triple and a layup to take a 31-21 advantage to the locker room.

SMU’s leading scorer, Jasmine Smith, missed the game. Too bad because she’s a Houston area native. Hope she’s back soon. Coogs have narrowly lost a lot of games but kept this one out of reach and finished strong.

What a game for Sophomore F Chantae Embry tallied 14 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
