Mustangs Fall At USF

TAMPA, Fla. (SMU)- Savannah Wilkinson's double-double, including 19 points and 10 rebounds wasn't enough to lift the SMU women's basketball team to victory against South Florida. The Bulls defeated the Mustangs 70-62 in Yuengling Center Saturday.

Three Mustangs scored in double figures. Wilkinson's fifth season and 19th career double-double led the way, with Chantae Embry adding 17 points, marking her 15th double-digit scoring performance this season. Reagan Bradley added 11 points and five assists to earn 300 career assists and move to No. 8 all-time in SMU's record book. Jasmine Smith tallied nine points, seven assists and three boards, tallying her 500th career rebound.

SMU (15-9, 6-6 American Athletic Conference) led 19-17 after the first frame. SMU shot 100% (6-6) from the field, including a perfect 3-3 mark from beyond the arc to open the contest. The Bulls countered with a run of their own, but neither team scored for the last three minutes of the first period.

The Mustangs trailed by two at the break after Elena Tsineke beat the buzzer to end the half. SMU's defense was impressive in the second period, not allowing a USF field goal for over half of the period. Embry and Wilkinson both scored 10 points in the first half.

USF took control of the game with a 13-1 run to open the second half. SMU countered with a second stint of holding the Bulls without a field goal for over five minutes. Despite the defensive effort, SMU trailed 47-40 entering the final period.

The Mustangs chipped away at the Bulls lead by stringing together a 6-0 run in the fourth, but could not put together enough stops in the fourth quarter.
