Former University of Texas coach Tom Penders appears to be a leading candidate to coach the University of Houston men's basketball team.

Penders, who resigned under pressure at Texas following the 1997-98 season, took the Longhorns to eight NCAA Tournament appearances in 10 seasons, including the Elite Eight in 1990.

His teams went 208-110 at Texas with three Southwest Conference titles.

Penders coached for two seasons at George Washington following his stay at Texas. He currently is out of coaching.

Penders' coaching style with the Longhorns was built around a fast-break offense and a pressing defense.

UH athletic director Dave Maggard has declined to comment on the coaching search but reportedly has been in contact with Penders several times.

UTEP coach Billy Gillispie, another prominent possibility, is barred from talking to other schools while the Miners play in the NCAA Tournament and is likely in line for a pay raise to an estimated $400,000 a year, considerably higher than UH figures to afford.

Former Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy reportedly is pursuing other vacancies at this time.

As long as he's not a candidate at SMU. I never liked the guy.
