American Athletic Conference Opponent Pairings Announced

IRVING, Texas (The American/SMU) - The American Athletic Conference announced its 18-game schedule format for the 2023-24 men's basketball season today.

SMU will play five conference opponents twice: East Carolina, Memphis, North Texas, Tulane and UAB. The Mustangs will play home games only against Charlotte, Temple, Tulsa and UTSA, and play road games only versus Florida Atlantic, Rice, South Florida and Wichita State.

The AAC schedule will open the first week of January. The American Men's Basketball Championship is March 13-17 (Wednesday-Sunday) at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.

In non-conference play, the Mustangs will host Dayton and Texas A&M at Moody Coliseum plus a road game at Arizona State. SMU will also play in the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off Nov. 20-22, facing West Virginia and then Wisconsin or Virginia.

The Mustangs are entering the second season under Head Coach Rob Lanier. The Mustangs return three starters in Zhuric Phelps, Samuell Williamson and Jalen Smith plus a transfer class ranked as high as No. 42 nationally (247 Sports) and second in The American.

Only AAC schedule desire would be to host Wichita State. Good to see Memphis and UNT with home and away plus hosting Temple, Tulsa and UTSA. A&M brought a couple thousand to see Boise State at Dickies last year. That one should be fun.

Home & home with very good Memphis & UNT teams and we have to play that Final Four FAU team at their place. That will be a great challenge as I think most of their guys are coming back as well as their coach (really surprising in this day and age)
