Four Mustangs Score In Double Figures In SMU's Season Opening Victory Over UC Riverside

DALLAS (SMU)- Four Mustangs scored in double figures as the SMU women's basketball team defeated UC Riverside 78-55 in its season opener on Monday afternoon in Moody Coliseum.

Tiara Young's 20 points, three rebounds and five assists led SMU (1-0). Chantae Embry posted a double-double, totaling 16 points and 12 rebounds. Embry added five assists and two steals. Reagan Bradley scored 12 points and added two rebounds and two assists. Bradley moved to seventh on SMU's all-time career assists list (320). Ella Brow finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and an assist.

Tamia Jones turned in seven points, five rebounds, and four assists. TK Pitts added six points, a rebound, and a steal. Amirah Abdur-Rahim scored four points and grabbed three rebounds.

The Mustangs shot 51.8% from the field, while holding the Highlanders to 32.8% on the night.

SMU (1-0) dominated the fourth quarter from start to finish. The Mustangs held the Highlanders scoreless for nearly half the period. Three consecutive field goals capped off by a Young and one layup put the Mustangs in front by 20. SMU used seven unanswered to close out the game.

A three-point jumper from Brow and a layup from Abdur-Rahim countered four UC Riverside points to start the third period. The Mustangs held the Highlanders scoreless for over two and a half minutes while rattling off 11 points to extend the lead to 51-38. UC Riverside closed the quarter on an 8-0 run, but trailed by seven heading into the fourth.

UC Riverside scored eight unanswered to begin the second period. SMU regained the lead after a Brow three-point shot. UCR cut the deficit back to two, but a 10-0 run sent the Mustangs into the half up 37-25. Three Mustangs (Young, Jones, Bradley) scored seven points in the first half.

Embry started the scoring, knocking down a three-point jump shot, and a Jones steal and Young driving layup propelled SMU out to an early 7-2 lead. Back-to-back three-pointers put the Mustangs up 14-2 and forced a UC Riverside timeout. The Mustangs led 16-8 after the first frame.

Pretty sure torn ACL. Terrible loss to suffer for a big piece of the team pie.
