Five Mustangs Score In Double Figures To Lead SMU Over Alabama State

DALLAS (SMU)- The SMU women's basketball team cruised to a 96-47 victory over Alabama State on Saturday afternoon in Moody Coliseum.

SMU (2-0) posted the most points in the Toyelle Wilson era. The Mustangs shot 56% from the field (36-64), including 64% (7-11) from the three point line, while holding Alabama State to 33% on the night. SMU out rebounded the Hornets 41-33 and dominated in the paint, outscoring Alabama State 44-18. SMU led 30-7 in fast break points, and held a 24-14 edge in assists, while recording nine more steals. The Mustang defense forced 32 turnovers.

Amirah Abdur-Rahim led the Mustangs after having a career day. Abdur-Rahim posted a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds), while adding four blocks, two steals, and an assist. Reagan Bradley moved to sixth on SMU's all-time assist list after tying her career high of nine and adding three steals, two rebounds, and two points.

Chantae Embry and Tiara Young both turned in their second double-digit scoring performances in as many games. Embry finished with 13, four rebounds, an assist, and a steal, while Young finished with 17 points, two rebounds, and two assists.

Maya Chandler reached double-digits, scoring 16 points and adding four rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Tamia Jones tallied 12 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and a career-high six steals. TK Pitts chipped in nine points and three rebounds, and Jiya Perry added a career-high eight points. Donavia Hall finished with three assists, two steals, and two rebounds.

SMU started the game on a 10-point run. Jones knocked down a three-pointer to get the game started on the way to scoring seven out of the first 10 points, while the Mustangs held the Hornets scoreless for the first half of the quarter. Chandler scored an and-one layup to extend SMU's lead after an Alabama State timeout. A 7-0 run sparked by a Chandler three-point jumper put the Mustangs in front 22-6, and SMU used its momentum to lead 30-11 after the first quarter.

Pitts scored the first bucket of the second. SMU used six unanswered after holding Alabama State scoreless for over three minutes to lead by 24 at the second quarter media timeout. A Hall made a free throw, and a layup from Perry extended the Mustang lead on the way to closing out the quarter on a 17-2 run over the final eight minutes of the frame.

Embry knocked down her second three point shot of the day to begin the second half. Abdur-Rahim passed her career high in points with an and-one layup to put the Mustangs in front 60-24. Back-to-back layups from Pitts and a bucket from Chandler gave SMU six straight.

SMU led by 36 heading into the fourth. Pitts made a layup through contact, followed by Jones's second three-point shot of the afternoon, which propelled SMU on a 14-2 run to lead 92-47.
