Mustangs Fall To No. 5 Colorado

DALLAS (SMU)- SMU suffered its first loss of the season with an 84-69 setback against No. 5 Colorado on Saturday night in Moody Coliseum. Graduate guard Tiara Young led all scorers with 30 points.

Young's 30 points marked a career-high and put her in double figures for the fourth time this season. She tallied four rebounds, two assists, and a block. Chantae Embry turned in 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and a steal.

Tamia Jones scored four points, grabbed four rebounds, and had a block, and Reagan Bradley finished with six points, four rebounds, and dished out three assists. Amirah Abdur-Rahim chipped in eight points, four rebounds, two blocks, and an assist. TK Pitts finished with four points and a pair of steals. Jiya Perry scored three points.

Bradley got the scoring started for the Mustangs with a three-point shot. Jones converted on a drive to tie the game at five. Back-to-back buckets from Young brought the Mustangs within one point. Embry grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a layup through traffic before the media timeout. Young gave SMU a 13-12 lead after a driving bucket out of the break. SMU trailed 18-13 after the Buffaloes closed the quarter on a 6-0 run.

Abdur-Rahim scored the first basket of the second quarter for the Mustangs. An Embry three-pointer, Abdur-Rahim's third bucket off a turnaround jumper, and a jump shot from Young brought the Mustang deficit within six points on three separate occasions in the first half of the frame. Embry hit back-to-back three-pointers after Jones got SMU's possession back by taking a charge. SMU trailed 37-34 after Perry hit her first triple of the evening. Young converted a pair of free throws to cut the Buffalo lead to one. Colorado closed the quarter with seven unanswered to lead 44-36 at the half.

Young cashed in on an and-one layup and knocked down two free throws to start the third. Bradley hit two free throws to halt a 6-0 Buffalo run. Both teams went through scoring droughts before Young scored two more, and Colorado countered with back-to-back triples. Embry hit her fourth three-pointer of the night to bring it within 12 heading to the fourth quarter.

Young drew a foul and converted two free throws to start the fourth before hitting a contested jumper as the shot clock winded down to bring the Mustangs back within striking distance. Pitts finished through a foul and knocked down a free throw to score her first points of the night. The Buffaloes went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 16. SMU continued to battle but was unable to close in.
