Mustangs Fall To Harvard

SAN DIEGO (SMU)- The SMU women's basketball team fell to Harvard 80-67 in the finale of the San Diego Classic on Saturday afternoon in Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Tiara Young led the Mustangs with 17 points. The graduate guard grabbed eight rebounds and passed out three assists. Tamia Jones scored in double-digits for the second straight day. Jones finished with 14 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. TK Pitts added 11 points, three rebounds, and two steals.

Chantae Embry tallied five points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal, while Jessica Peterson scored four points and grabbed five boards. Reagan Bradley finished with two points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Jiya Perry added four points, a rebound, and a steal. Senior guard Maya Chandler chipped in eight points.

Young finished her second and-one layup to bring SMU within eight to start the final frame. The Mustangs battled in an even fourth quarter, but were unable to close in. Young hit Embry in the post for a bucket, and Jones picked off a pass and finished in transition to give SMU a quick four points out of the half. Pitts hit a triple and put back a layup off a rebound to counter another one from Harvard. The Crimson used seven unanswered to lead 58-39 at the third quarter media timeout. Two buckets from Young and free throws from Peterson narrowed the gap, and Young drove to the basket and finished an and-one layup to bring the Mustangs within 11 entering the fourth.

Pitts finished an and-one layup, and Jones hit another triple to match two Harvard three-pointers to start the second quarter. Harvard hit five out of its last seven field goals to take an 18-point lead into the half.

Jones hit a three-pointer and finished an and-one layup on the way to scoring the Mustangs' first nine points. SMU battled to counter the Crimson's four first quarter three-pointers but trailed 22-15 heading to the second.
