SMU Picks Up Road Win At Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. (SMU)- The SMU women's basketball team defeated Louisiana Tech 69-53 on Thursday night in the Thomas Assembly Center.

Three Mustangs scored in double-figures, led by Tiara Young's 19 points. SMU held Louisiana Tech to 31% shooting from the field, including an 18% clip from behind the arc while forcing 18 turnovers.

Tamia Jones did it all for the Mustangs. The senior guard finished with nine points, five assists, four rebounds, four steals, and three blocks. Amirah Abdur-Rahim reached double figures for the fifth time this season with 16 points. She added four rebounds, two steals, and a block.

Reagan Bradley scored 10 points, grabbed four boards, and passed out three assists. Maya Chandler scored eight points and grabbed two rebounds, while TK Pitts chipped in three points and four boards. Freshman Aaliyah Henderson scored four points and added seven rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

Bradley converted off a turnover and finished in transition to spark six unanswered and force a Louisiana Tech timeout to start the fourth. Abdur-Rahim scored on back-to-back possessions to extend the lead to 17. Two more buckets from Young put SMU ahead 60-46 with less than two minutes to play. Jones finished in transition off her fourth steal of the night to ice the victory.

Bradley hit Pitts for a corner three to kick off the second half. Chandler nailed her second triple of the night to give SMU a 10-point lead while the Mustangs held La Tech scoreless for nearly four minutes. Jones finished through contact and hit a free throw to put the Mustangs up 11 heading to the fourth.

Young hit a jumper, and Henderson finished a layup to give SMU the first four points of the second frame. A Bradley triple extended SMU's lead and helped the Mustangs take a 28-26 lead into the half.

SMU countered an early 9-2 deficit with 10 unanswered sparked by a triple from Jones. Abdur-Rahim picked off a pass and knocked down a pair of free throws on the other end before Young finished in transition. Chandler hit a three-pointer to extend the run and force a La Tech timeout with the Mustangs leading 14-13. Abdur-Rahim finished in traffic to give SMU a one-point lead heading into the second.

La Tech has a history of strong women's hoops and Ruston is not an easy place to win but that team is down this year and has lost it's only 2 home games so far. Still ALWAYS good to win on the road no matter who the opponent
