Tiara Young Scores 32 In SMU’s 84-75 Loss At UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (SMU)- Tiara Young totaled 32 points, but the SMU women's basketball team fell to UAB 84-75 on Sunday afternoon in Bartow Arena.

Young's 32 led SMU (8-8; 2-3 American Athletic Conference). The graduate guard added six rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Reagan Bradley scored double-digit points for the fourth consecutive game with 12. Bradley added five rebounds and five assists. Maya Chandler scored 13 points and passed out two assists, and Tamia Jones grabbed five boards and finished with five assists.

Amirah Abdur-Rahim turned in six points, three boards, two assists, and a steal, and TK Pitts finished with five points, five rebounds, and two steals. Donavia Hall scored a career-high six points and added grabbed three rebounds.

Bradley finished a layup, and Young drilled a pull-up jumper and a free throw to bring the Mustangs within three with three minutes remaining. UAB converted an and one and another layup to extend its lead to eight with 1:45 remaining. SMU continued to fight by forcing three turnovers over the next minute and using buckets from Young and Chandler to climb back within four with 34 seconds remaining. The Blazers made several free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Back-to-back layups from Abdur-Rahim and Chandler halted a 6-0 run from the Blazers early in the third. SMU answered with an 11-0 run capped off by an and-one from Young. Chandler drilled a triple to bring the Mustangs within seven at the end of the quarter. SMU held UAB without a field goal for over seven minutes in the third, but UAB used 100% (10-10) shooting from the charity stripe to take a 61-54 lead into the fourth.

SMU started the second quarter five for six from the field, highlighted by a triple from Bradley and two straight buckets from Hall that sparked a 7-0 run to cut the Mustangs deficit to five entering the media timeout. UAB matched with a run of its own, scoring eight unanswered to extend their lead to 11. The Blazers led 43-30 at the half. Bradley put the Mustangs on the board with an early three-pointer that matched a UAB and one layup to start the game. The Blazers made eight out of 11 field goal attempts to end the first quarter with a 24-13 lead.
