Despite An Embry Double-Double, SMU Falls At Rice

HOUSTON (SMU)- Despite Chantae Embry's second double-double of the season, the SMU women's basketball team fell to Rice 69-60 on Wednesday night in Tudor Fieldhouse.

Embry logged 11 points to go with her 10 rebounds. Tiara Young's 18 led SMU (10-11; 4-6 American Athletic Conference). The graduate guard grabbed seven rebounds, passed out six assists, and blocked two shots. Reagan Bradley finished with 12 points, two rebounds, an assist and one steal, and Amirah Abdur-Rahim scored 12 points, and grabbed seven boards.

Maya Chandler scored two points and grabbed as many rebounds, and freshman Aaliyah Henderson scored three points and grabbed three rebounds. TK Pitts tallied two points and chipped in a rebound and a steal.

The Owls started the fourth on a 10-1 run to regain their lead. SMU battled back, but seven unanswered from Rice extended the Owls lead to 11 with a minute and a half left to play. Rice made five field goals in a row to take a six point lead late in the third. The Mustangs countered with two and one layups, one from Henderson and one from Young, that started an 8-0 run to give SMU a 50-48 lead heading to the fourth.

An Embry triple sparked six unanswered, putting the Mustangs ahead by four with 1:25 to play in the second quarter. Young finished a layup at the buzzer to send SMU into the half with a 34-30 lead. Rice hit a last-second three-pointer to end the first with a 17-15 lead despite eight points from Abdur-Rahim.
