Mustangs Open AAC Championship Play On Thursday At 8 p.m.

IRVING, Texas (SMU/The American) – Junior guard Zhuric Phelps was named All-American Athletic Conference Second Team, the league announced Tuesday in advance of the AAC Championship at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.

Phelps is averaging team bests of 14.8 points (12th AAC) and 1.9 steals (5th AAC) while also recording 4.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He is hitting 75.0% on free throws (20th AAC) and has 13 blocked shots. He has scored in double figures in 28 of 31 games this season, including 14 straight to finish the conference season.

He has earned two AAC Weekly Honor Roll spots this season (Nov. 27, Feb. 12) and six weekly honors in his career. Earlier this season, Phelps was on the Fort Myers Tip-Off All-Tournament Team where the Mustangs defeated West Virginia in the semifinal before falling to Wisconsin in the championship.

Phelps became the 44th Mustang to score 1,000 points at SMU in the win at Tulane on Feb. 15. He now has 1,107 points to rank 34th all-time on the Hilltop. He is also tied for seventh in career steals (153). In the overtime win over ECU on March 6, he hit the game-tying 3-pointer with 5.4 seconds left in regulation and finished 10-for-10 at the free-throw line to become the 18th Mustang to go perfect with at least 10 attempts.

The No. 6-seeded Mustangs (20-11, 11-7 AAC) open the American Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT. SMU will face the winner of Wednesday's first-round game between No. 11 Temple (12-19, 5-13 AAC) and No. 14 UTSA (11-20, 5-13 AAC).
