DALLAS (SMU) - Dean Christian has been named an assistant men’s basketball coach at SMU, Head Coach Jimmy Tubbs announced, Tuesday, May 18.

In his new role, Christian will assist in on-campus recruiting, individual player workouts, scouting and player development on the court and in the classroom.

“Dean is a very bright young man,” said Tubbs. “As an Air Force graduate, his background will mesh well with what we do here at SMU. He is a tireless worker and a real ‘go-getter.’ He has a passion and love for the game that will be a bonus to our players and our staff.”

Christian comes to SMU following a long tenure at the Air Force Academy, where he served in a variety of roles. For the past two seasons, Christian has been the Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at the USAFA Preparatory School after serving as an Assistant Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach since 2001. He led the squad to a 71-28 record in three seasons at the helm, including a 31-3 mark in 2003-04 – the best record in school history. Five of his former players were members of Air Force Academy’s record-setting 22-7 team in 2003-04, as the Falcons reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 42 years.

Prior to his time at the Preparatory School, Christian was an assistant coach for the Air Force Academy under Coach Reggie Minton for four seasons. In his role, he recruited back-to-back Mountain West Freshmen of the Year in Tommy Bellairs and Joel Gerlach. He was also the USAFA’s NCAA Compliance Coordinator.

Christian has also served as head coach for numerous teams including various USAF and USA Armed Forces teams and CISM in Treviso, Italy, and as an assistant with the Sacramento Kings Summer Pro-Am squad. He was also a Detachment Commander for the Second Infantry Division Aviation Brigade in Korea.

Christian received a BS from the USAFA in 1982 and an MS from Northern Colorado in 1994

I've never heard of the guy, but he sure sounds impressive. Can't wait for football and soccer season, but I'm really eager to see Jimmy's team, too.
