Quinton Ross update

Postby PG » Mon May 24, 2004 7:25 pm

Spoke to Kimball coach Royce Johnson over the weekend who said that Q is back in town and is set to get married in July. He's supposed to get a 2 year deal either from the Clippers or Hawks. The Clips had every intention of keeping him last season but needed some big man depth since Brand and Kaman were hurt when the season started. They wanted him to play in the NBDL but the money was much less than what he made in Belgium. He had already turned down an even bigger deal by far to play in France because the Clips told him they wanted to keep him so Belgium was the next best option.

If he was doing a one-year stint in Europe, why would he turn down the bigger cash of playing in France? As long as he keeps the chance to return to the NBA, wouldn't you think he should get the bigger check while playing wherever the best offer is?

The offer was on the table while he was with the Clippers. The Clips said they wanted him. There's no way you say no to the NBA to go overseas. They cut him late and had to find a different offer.

Thanks for the update, PG. Congrats to Q.

Any word if Royce applied for one of the assistant positions?

I didn't get a chance to ask him about that or how things were going with Coach Tubbs in general (recruiting, etc.). I would've liked to but he was with some other people si I didn't want to keep him too long.

Hope he goes back to the Clip Joint - the Clippers look like the Lakers next to Atlanta. I'm not sure the Hawks would win the CBA title.
Good luck, Q!

I disagree. There are a lot of perks to playing over seas-- especially if you make a name for yourself. Less grueling schedule. Less wear on the body. Less travel. I know that some players have really enjoyed it over there and have turned down the NBA to play overseas. I know it would be a difficult decision for us at this time...a lot of things would go in to the decision-- not just money.

Take the Clippers over the Hawks? I wouldn't take the Clippers over any NBA team. Their franchise is the absolutely worst in history of the NBA. The NBA plays the 1st 82 games just to eliminate the Clippers. They're worse than the Football Cardinals as a place to expect wins. The hawks have been to the playoffs about 3-4 times qas much (OP never checks facts).
I wish all the best for the Q whereever he goes. He would make even me a Clipper fan. I wish we had another like him at SMU right now.
