Mustangs Collect AAC Victory At Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – SMU took down in-state rival Houston in four sets (25-22, 25-18, 16-25, 25-14) on Friday night. The Mustangs gave UH its fourth loss on the season thanks to hot hitting (.280) and a collective effort at the net from Jamison Wheeler, Rachel Woulfe, and Hannah Jacobs. The trio combined for 44 of the team's 58 kills. Zairyn Hemsley stepped up making her first start on the year at the setter position combining for 41 assists and a personal-best 21 digs to lead the team in both categories.

Defensively SMU (8-9, 4-3 AAC) was also stellar notching a season-high 79 digs as three Mustangs came away with double-digits in that category. SMU had several other standout statistics. Alex Glover came away with a career-high four assists while Bria' Merchant tied her career-high with six assists.

Houston (15-4, 5-2 AAC) led most of the first set. Tied at 10, SMU finally broke through to grab its first lead of the match after a service ace from Merchant and a vicious kill by Wheeler. UH tied it up again at 13, but another 2-0 run by the Mustangs forced a timeout by the Cougars. SMU later found a four-point lead (20-16) after back-to-back kills by Kaylyn Winkler and Woulfe. Alex Glover gave the Mustangs match point with a kill. Wheeler led SMU with seven kills in the opening set as the Mustangs hit .381.

SMU took the momentum into the second set and found an 11-6 lead. A 7-3 run gave the Mustangs its largest lead of the match (18-11) and SMU was firing on all cylinders. The Mustangs never looked back or gave UH a chance to climb back into the set. SMU limited Houston to a .061 hitting percentage to take a 2-0 lead on the road.

UH was not going to go down without a fight. The Cougars secured 14 kills and six block assists along the way to take the third set. SMU did not let this setback effect its rhythm. The Mustangs jumped out in front 7-3 in the fourth. SMU continued its attack and later nearly doubled up the home team 21-11. SMU took down the host team with 17 kills and a .405 hitting percentage in the final set.

Wheeler had a season-high 43 attacks and Woulfe equaled her career-best with six digs.

Abbie Jackson led the Cougars with 19 kills and 20 digs.
