Swimming a Mid Season assessment

Postby ponyswim » Fri Nov 26, 2021 2:19 pm

Some thoughts on the progress on SMU men's swimming at mid season:
Last week SMU competed in a fall invitational where they were at least somewhat rested and trying to swim fast. Are there signs of SMU heading back to national relevance?
Men - two individual school records - Justin Baker - 19.31 50 free, Jack Easton - 1:44.57 200 IM. Note that many of the Men's school records are VERY old - so there is some progress here.
200 Medley relay - 1:25.52 (1:24.22 is the A cut for NCAA's, meaning they are guaranteed to go)
200 Free Relay - 1:18.1 (1:17.07 is the A cut)
With progress these should relays could make the meet. With significant progress the 400 free and medley are a long shot, but possible.
Indiviuals - Jason Baker's 19.31 very possibly will make it, but 19.15 or so would be safe. Collin Feehery and Cotton Fields 400 IM (3:44 and 3:46) need to get to 3:43 or better to make it. Jack Easton and Cotton Fields (1:43 now), need to be 1:41 or better. 200 Breast - Collin Feehery, Caleb Rhodenbaugh, (1:55, 1:56) and some others have a chance to be 1:53 which should make the meet.
Probably 8-10 other guys who, with a great next 3 months could improve enough to make the meet.
Joe Rusnock, Russell Exum and Cotton Fields are freshmen who are making an impact.

Women are not as far along. Some progress, but much to do to get people to the NCAAA championships.

Pony swim,

Thanks for taking time to provide a Mid-Season review. I share your cautious optimism toward the Men’s Team, especially with the progress with some of the relays. Relays at the Nationals make a team revelant and hopefully credible and we haven’t been credible for a long time.

Greg is working them hard and pushing our recruits to new Personal bests. Once we show up at Nationals, the level of our recruits should trend up.

And, the Women’s Team does have a longer road.

Thanks for the post.
