Five Mustangs Earn All-East Region Honors
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (United Soccer Coaches/SMU) – Cole Johnson, Mads Westergren, Bailey Sparks and Jelldrik Dallmann were named to the United Soccer Coaches' NCAA Division I All-East Region First Team, with junior Kyran Chambron Pinho also receiving Third Team honors.
Cole Johnson earned the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year after recording 46 saves and eight shutouts in his senior season. Johnson also earned AAC Goalkeeper of the Week four times, three of which were earned consecutively.
Bailey Sparks concluded his junior season tied for third in the AAC in assists with five, all of which were scored in different games throughout the season. The Plano native logged the first goal of the Mustangs' 2023 NCAA Tournament run with a header against Denver.
Jelldrik Dallmann was a unanimous All-AAC First Team selection. He ended the season tied for first place in conference with the most goals scored with 14. Dallmann was also ranked in the top 100 national players by Top Drawer Soccer, coming in at No. 27. Dallmann tallied three matches with multiple goals, including two hat tricks.
All four Mustangs who were honored with the All-East Region First Team selections were also placed on the All-AAC First Team.
Kyran Chambron Pinho, who played 1,581 minutes on the season and garnered three assists, was named as a Third Team selection. His final assist of the season was earned on Nov. 9, in the AAC Tournament semifinals against Memphis. The Germany native, was the AAC Defensive Player of the Week following scoring the game winner against UAB, which then secured the Mustangs' at least a share of the regular season conference title.
SMU concluded their season in the round of sixteen of the 2023 NCAA Tournament. This was head coach Kevin Hudson's fourth appearance in the Sweet Sixteen and the program's 25th overall.
