Mustangs Earn Top Seed in AAC Championship

DALLAS — Following their 4-3 win over Memphis, the Mustangs earned the No. 1 seed in the 2024 American Athletic Conference Championship — the conference announced Monday evening.

SMU, the defending conference champions, are No. 45 and are 10-11 overall on the year and 5-1 in conference.

During the March 5 rankings, junior Drew Morris was ranked No. 118 in the singles rankings and was named the AAC Player of the Week. This was a result of her winning the match against then-No. 17 Vanderbilt for the Mustangs with her three set thriller against then-No. 24 Bridget Stammel.

The Mustangs are currently ranked No. 45 in the country by the ITA, with SMU pair Lana Mavor and Taylor Johnson ranked No. 38 in the doubles rankings.

SMU earned the first-seed for the second straight season, winning its first American Athletic Conference title last season. This will be the Mustangs first time hosting the championship.

In 2023, the Mustangs turned in the most dominant performance in tournament history. They won all three matches by 4-0 scores, taking all 12 singles contests in straight sets and going 6-0 in doubles during the tournament.

Graduate student Hadley Doyle, who clinched the victory for SMU over Memphis earlier today, was then-named the AAC Player of the Year.

New to SMU's roster and to the AAC Championship this year will be two freshmen - Caroline McGinley and Millie Skelton.

McGinley, a New Jersey native, is 13-14 on the season and 1-1 against nationally ranked opponents. Skelton, hailing to the Hilltop from Great Britain, has nine doubles wins and six victories from singles play.
