SMU Faces Alabama in First Round of NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) — SMU will face Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 4th at 1:00 p.m. as announced during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday evening.
The Mustangs earned an automatic bid after winning their second straight American Athletic Conference Championship.

This is SMU's 13th NCAA tournament appearance in program history.

SMU (13-11) will travel to Stillwalter, Oklahoma to compete in a regional round against Alabama (15-10). The winner will face either No. 1 Oklahoma State (27-0) or Fairfield (12-8) in the second round on May 4th or 5th.

Most recently, SMU won its second straight American Athletic Conference Championship, defeating Memphis 4-0 on April 21 at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.

SMU (13-11) earned the top seed going into the Championship, with Memphis (17-8) being the No. 3 seed. The Mustangs won 22 of 27 matches across singles and doubles play in the championship. Lana Mavor, a Maine native, was also named the Most Outstanding Performer of the 2024 AAC Championship.

The Mustangs also had four wins against nationally ranked teams this year, including then-No. 17 Vanderbilt (4-3), then-No.27 Denver (4-0) and twice versus then-No. 47 Memphis (4-3 on senior day, 4-0 in AAC Championship).

Lana Mavor and Taylor Johnson, the 2023 AAC Championship Most Outstanding Performer, have 13 doubles wins on the season and are No. 40 in the ITA's most recent rankings (April 23).
SMU's newest roster additions, freshmen Millie Skelton and Caroline McGinley, have clinched four times this year for the Mustangs. McGinley secured the wins against Wichita State, LSU and Texas A&M Corpus Christi while Skelton clinched in singles play against UTSA in the AAC Championship Quarterfinals.

The Mustangs enter the regional round this weekend with hopes of advancing to a super-regional match on May 10 or 11. The NCAA quarterfinals, semifinals and championship are May 17-19 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
