May 10, 2006

DALLAS (SMU) - The 2006 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship is set to begin Thursday at Kidd Field on the campus of UTEP. The three-day event will feature some of the top track and field athletes in the country as more than 100 athletes that have qualified for NCAA Regional competition will be competing for the league's outdoor titles.

SMU will be represented by 13 student-athletes, led by high jumper Gaelle Niare, who tops a group of five C-USA athletes (including teammate Alesha Stegemoller ) who have regionally-qualified in the high jump this season. Niare is ranked fourth nationally in the latest Trackwire Dandy Dozen in the high jump. Niare cleared a season-best 6-01.50" at the Texas Relays on April 8. Stegemoller is tied with four others at 5-08.75" for the second-best effort in C-USA this season.

Distance runner Rachael Forish and thrower Christina Mueller are the other two Mustangs who have reached regional-qualifying standards in their respective events. Forish owns the third-best time in the 5,000-Meter run (16:37.36), while Mueller has the third best discus throw of 162-09".
Competition begins Thursday with the women's heptathlon, women's hammer throw and the 10,000-meter run opening the weekend's events.
