LUBBOCK, Texas (SMU)-- The undefeated SMU volleyball team beat Texas Tech at the Red Raider Round Up, 3-1, taking the tournament title and snaring three awards in the process.

Junior middle blocker Natalie Peters was named Tournament MVP, while junior setter Stefanie Kons and senior outside hitter Caitlin Rainbird were each named to the All-Tournament team.

Peters pounded out 21 kills against the Red Raiders, hitting .364 on the night. Meanwhile, Kons racked up 50 assists on the evening, upping her total to 259 for the season. Rainbird recorded five kills and nine digs, helping lift the Mustangs over Tech.

Game one saw the Mustangs lead the Red Raiders nearly the entire game. Senior outside hitters Rachel Giubilato and Rainbird held Tech at bay, amassing 10 kills and nine digs between them. Kons dished out 12 assists, while sophomore libero Candice Davis had 13 digs. Tech threatened near the end, but the Mustangs held on to win the game, 30-26.

In game two, the Mustangs and Red Raiders traded points for the majority of the game, neither team sustaining more than a two point lead, until Texas Tech pulled away with their 20th point. Giubilato and Peters led the offense in game two, with Giubilato hitting .500 and Peters hitting .375. But SMU had a hard time keeping up with the Red Raiders, who finally put game two away, 30-22, ensuring at least four games would be played.

The third game was equally even-handed as the two teams again went back and forth the entire game. The Mustangs and Red Raiders stayed close right up to the end, forcing the game to extra points. With Peters hitting .500, SMU rallied and took the game, 32-30.

Tech jumped out to a quick lead in game four, but the Mustangs battled back. The score remained close, the two teams trading points. As Tech saw their greatest lead, SMU called a timeout. This proved to be the spark the Mustangs needed, as the momentum shifted in their favor. Peters had eight kills in game four, while Kons racked up 14 assists. SMU took the lead and never looked back, winning the fourth game, 30-26.

The Mustangs improve to 6-0 on the season, while the Red Raiders fall to 4-2. SMU is back in action Wednesday as it faces Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches at 7pm. For complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
