Walker Cup

Postby 50's PONY » Sat Sep 08, 2007 9:39 am

Colt and his partner, Dustin Johnson, halved their morning match and the score is now United States 2 and GB&I 2. The afternoon singles have started and Colt is 3 up in his match.
U.S. is up in 4 matches, behind in 3, and even in 1

Colt won his afternoon individual match 2 up but our last three matches were lost so the overall score after day one is 6-6.
Tomorrrow there will be TV coverage in the afternoon for the finish.

Colt and his partner won the Sunday morning match. He halved his Sunday singles match to help the USA clinch the Cup. So, he didn't lose a match.

Bobby Jones won the U.S Open, the U.S. Amateur, the British Open and the British Amateur in 1930 which he followed up with a Walker Cup in 1931. Francis Ouimet won the U.S. Amateur and the Walker Cup in 1931. Jack Nicklaus won an NCAA championship, a U.S. Amateur and a Walker Cup in 1961. That's pretty heady company for Colt.

I heard some speculation during the telecast that he would wait until after the U.S. Open since he would lose his auto exemption to that as well if he went pro before then.

I would do that, but the comments I heard that I think came 3rd hand but from him were that he would play the Masters due to not only the honor but the difficulty to get in. He would then turn pro because he wants to make some money. He is not on scholarship anymore and needs to get a pay check. It would be considerably easier to get in the U.S. Open as a professional than the Masters as an amatuer or a professional.
