Men's Soccer Falls To UCSB In OT
Dane Saintus Scores SMU Goal In 2-1 Loss

Sept. 14, 2007

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (SMU)--The No. 3 SMU men's soccer team suffered another defeat at the hands of No. 9 UC Santa Barbara Friday night in New Mexico. The Gauchos beat the Mustangs, 2-1, in overtime, marking the third time in two seasons that the Gauchos have defeated SMU.

The Gauchos got on the board first, when Ciaran O'Brien scored from 10 yards out, right up the middle in the 34th minute. Chris Pontius and Tino Nuñez were credited with assists. The score remained 1-0 heading into the half.

When the teams returned to the field, each team kept the other at bay until finally, in the 83rd minute, Dane Saintus went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and reeled off a shot from the right side of the box to the left side of the net, putting the Mustangs on the board and knotting the score at 1-1.

Saintus' goal sent the game into overtime. The teams battled for over five minutes, but UCSB's Eric Avila managed a shot off a pass from O'Brien, scoring the game-winning goal in the 97th minute.

The Mustangs didn't help their own cause by racking up three yellow cards on the night. Ryan Mirsky, Bruno Guarda and Scott Corbin each picked up a warning from the officials. The Gauchos out shot the Mustangs, 19-12, and held the advantage in corner kicks 8-5.

SMU is back in action Sunday at 1:00 p.m., as it faces Washington in day two of the NIKE/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational. For complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.

That's like history repeating itself again - & again & again.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
