Caitlin Carter Scores Game-Winner In Double-Overtime

Sept. 21, 2007

DALLAS (SMU) - Junior midfielder Caitlin Carter blasted a curling shot into the upper left corner in the second overtime to lift the SMU women's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over the visiting TCU Horned Frogs.

With the victory, the Mustangs (3-1-1) continued their undefeated streak against the Horned Frogs (3-4). In the 27 meetings between the schools, SMU has won 25 times and the teams have tied twice.

TCU scored first, when Jackie Torda pounced on a loose ball and lifted a high shot into the upper right corner of the SMU goal in the 12th minute. But the Ponies evened the score in the 36th minute when freshman Kristin Medeiros threaded a long lead pass up the left side of the field to senior Brittany Vice, who crossed the ball into the middle, where freshman Lauren Shepherd beat the TCU defense to the ball and banked the tying goal in off the left goalpost.

Vice was credited with the go-ahead goal when her cross in the 56th minute was redirected into the goal by TCU defender Caroline Starns. SMU extended its lead in the 72nd minute on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Allison Brill.

TCU didn't go away quietly, scoring off corner kicks in the 75th and 90th minutes off corner kicks, sending the game to overtime.

After battling through a scoreless first overtime period, Carter - a converted defender - ended the game in the 105th minute with her first goal of the year, and the second of her career.

SMU head coach Brent Erwin said the fashion in which his team won was as important as the victory itself.

"It's always good to win, but the way we won was incredible," Erwin said. "To go down, 1-0, and then battle back and get the next goal and the second and the third - then to give up they tying goal with just seconds left and come back to win it in overtime ... this team showed guts. This team showed character."

SMU outshot TCU, 16-13, and had 11 shots on goal to the Frogs' seven.

The Mustangs head to Stillwater, Okla., Sunday to face Oklahoma State, and return home Friday, Sept. 28, to face Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. For ticket information and a complete schedule, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
