SMU Men's Swimming Competes in Day Two of American Short Course
Clark and Johnson Missed Olympic Cuts on Day Two, Ready For Third Try

AUSTIN (SMU)--Two current and one former member of the No. 20 SMU men's swimming team tried for Olympic cuts Friday at the 2008 All-American Long Course Championships in Austin.

Nate Clark and Mitchell Johnson both turned in strong performances Friday, but missed the qualifying marks in their respective events.

Clark swam his best-ever long course time in the 200m free, touching the wall in 1:53.19, just three-tenths of a second outside the Olympic cut.

Johnson competed in the 100m breast, placing sixth overall in the prelim with a time of 1:05.34, under a second slower than the Olympic cut. In the finals, Johnson swam the course in 1:05.65, finishing outside the cut.

Smith swam the 200m free, touching in at 1:56.51.

"It was a good night for us," said head coach Eddie Sinnott. "A world record was broken tonight on the women's side, so there are lots of good swims happening here. Nate swam a new best for him tonight, so he's not too disappointed with not making the cut. He had already made the cut in two other events, so this was just extra for him. Justin's time was also a personal best for him. We're looking forward to tomorrow night."

Saturday, the Mustangs wrap up the meet with Shane Milu expected to swim the 100 free and Johnson expected to swim the 200 breast. Smith will swim the 200 fly. Live results of both the prelims and finals can be found here. SMU recaps and results will be available on SMUMustangs.com following the finals.

We need to get a qualifier in the 100 free. America wins Olympic gold when a Mustang anchors the relays.

Shane Milu qualified today (Saturday) during prelims. He swam a very respectable 51.15. He'll look to improve on that time tonight in finals, but he qualified. :)
