Three Mustangs Turn in Strong Performances at European Championships

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands (SMU)--One current and two former SMU Mustang swimmers had strong performances at the European Championships over the last week, with two qualifying for their home countries' Olympic teams.

Angela San Juan Cisneros took fifth in the 50m fly and helped Spain to a sixth-place finish in the 400m medley relay. In the 50 fly, San Juan Cisneros swam the course 26.79, about three-quarters of a second behind the event winner from the Netherlands. In the 400 medley relay, San Juan Cisneros swam the third leg of the Spanish record-setting squad. The squad swam the course in 4:05.98.

Former Mustang and five-time national champion Flavia Rigamonti won the 1500m free, swimming to a 15:58.54 finish, setting a new championship record. She also took fourth in the 800m free, finishing in 8:28.16, and eighth in the 400m free in 4:12.67.

Martina Moravcova, volunteer assistant coach and 1997 NCAA swimmer of the year, qualified for her fifth Olympic team by swimming the 100m fly in 58.74, good for sixth place. It was Moravcova's best time in several years. She also finished the 50m and 100m free in ninth place.

Martina is amazing and will swim for Slovakia, while Flavia will compete for Switzerland.
