Mustangs (13-6) Look to Upset Bears at Waco


WACO, Texas (SMU)--The SMU men's tennis team heads to Waco to face No. 18 Baylor, Thursday, March 27.

About the Mustangs: SMU is 13-6 so far this season, with losses only to teams ranked in the top 30. As a team, the Mustangs are 81-33 (.711) in singles and 26-17 (.605) in doubles and have won their last three matches, including an upset over No. 36 Cal and a win last weekend over defending Ivy League champion Columbia. Several Mustangs will take three-plus match winning streaks into the weekend's action. Robin Fahgen (11-5) is riding a four-match win-streak at No. 2, Alex Skrypko (10-6) is on a six-match streak and David Kuczer (13-3) is on a five-match streak of his own. In addition, Darren Walsh, Bryan Griffin and Chris Hooshyar have each won at least their last three matches.

Last Time Out: The Mustangs took a hard-fought win over defending Ivy League champion Columbia, beating the Lions, 6-1. SMU won the doubles point by winning matches at Nos. 2 and 3. The Mustangs were also ahead at No. 1 doubles, but the match was unfinished. In singles, Kuczer, Skrypko and Oivind Alver each won their respective matches in straight sets. Chris Hooshyar and Adolfo Solares also won their singles matches, but needed three sets and super tiebreakers to do it. The Mustangs' sole loss of the day came at No. 6 singles, where Taylor St. Eve fell in two closely-contested sets.

Scouting the Bears: Baylor enters the match ranked No. 18 in the latest ITA poll. The Bears have a 10-7 record, with losses to Pepperdine, UCLA, USC, Ohio State, Virginia, Oklahoma State and UNC. Baylor is currently on a three-match losing streak, dropping their last three to Pepperdine, UCLA and USC. As a team, the Bears are 63-33 (.656) in singles and 30-20 (.600) in doubles this season. Baylor boasts four ranked singles players in No. 14 Denes Lukacs, No. 22 Lars Poerschke, No. 102 David Galic and No. 107 Dominik Mueller. The Bears also have two ranked pairs in No. 50 Galic/Jordan Rux and No. 60 Galic/Lukacs.
