WACO, Texas (SMU)--The Mustangs played a hard-fought match against No. 18 Baylor Thursday night, but ultimately fell, 5-2.

SMU slips to 13-7 on the season, while the Bears improve to 12-7.

The Mustangs started with strong doubles play, getting a big win at No. 1, with Alex Skrypko and Adolfo Solares pairing to defeat Attila Bucko and Dominik Mueller, 9-8 (7-4). Taylor St. Eve and Darren Walsh almost pulled out a win at No. 3, playing Jordan Rux and Gwen Corches to a 8-6 finish.

In singles, Chris Hooshyar fell in straight sets to No. 107 Mueller, 6-1, 6-1, dropping the Mustangs to a two-point deficit. Skrypko started to rally for SMU, defeating No. 102 David Galic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. David Kuczer fought at No. 1, but was overmatched by No. 14 Denes Lukacs, falling 6-2, 6-4.

Solares scored the second point for SMU, defeating Matt Brown in the fifth slot, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

St. Eve nearly overturned Bucko at No. 6. Bucko took the first set, 7-5, but St. Eve claimed the second, 7-5. In the decisive third set, Bucko rallied to a 6-2 win. Oivind Alver also had a battle on his hands as he narrowly lost to Corches in the third spot. Alver won the first set, 7-6 (8-6), but Corches took the second, 6-3. Alver almost eked out a win in the third set, but Corches managed to prevail, 7-5.

"The guys fought really hard," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "I feel like we're playing better and better. Tonight we had to play without one of our top guys. The match really came down to the wire. It was a fantastic effort. We had a chance to win. We played one of the top teams in the country hard. I think it speaks a lot to the level that we're playing at, to get so close without one of our top players. I'm excited about our development."

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday afternoon as they host Conference USA rival Memphis at the Turpin Center courts on SMU's campus. For the complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
