Mustangs Down Tigers, 6-1

DALLAS (SMU)--The SMU men's tennis team won a hard-fought match over Conference USA rival Memphis, 6-1, Saturday at the Turpin Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Mustangs move to 14-7 on the season, while the Tigers slip to 6-10.

The Mustangs were bolstered by strong doubles play, winning two of their three matches to win the point. Oivind Alver and Chris Hooshyar pulled out a win in their hotly-contested match at No. 2, defeating Leon Nasemann and Jimmy Khougassian 9-7. At No. 3, Darren Walsh and Taylor St. Eve defeated Spencer Heflin and Jordan Smith, 8-4. Alex Skrypko and Adolfo Solares dropped a close match at No. 1 to Amrit Narasimhan and Charlie Ramsay, 8-6.

SMU played well in singles from top to bottom. Robin Fahgen was the first off the court, dominating Smith at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. Fahgen's win was followed by one from Alver, who downed Michael Gaerthoeffner in straight sets at No. 4, 6-2, 6-4. Solares kept it rolling for the Mustangs, beating Benedikt Fischer at No. 6, 6-4, 7-5. Kuczer picked up at win at No. 1, defeating Narasimhan in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3..

Hooshyar had an epic battle on his hands at No. 5 against Ramsay. Hooshyar won the first set, 6-3, but dropped the second, 6-3. In the decisive third set, Hooshyar fell to Ramsay in a dramatic super tie-breaker, 11-9.

Skrypko wrapped up the match for the Mustangs by extending his winning streak to eight, taking the win over Nasemann at No. 2.

"I'm really proud of the team," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "It was a hard-fought match. I'm excited that we won the doubles point and that two of our red-shirt freshmen won their match. They really played fantastic at No. 3 doubles. I'm also proud of the way we played singles. We're getting better and better, which is exciting to see. I think it was really great for our guys to play in our new tennis stadium. We're looking forward to the rest of our matches, which will all be at home, including the Conference USA championships."

The Mustangs are back in action Wednesday, April 2 as they host Southeastern Louisiana in the Turpin Tennis Stadium at 2pm. For the complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
