Charity Savedra Named Assistant Volleyball Coach
Former Mustang Player Returns to Hilltop

June 2, 2008

DALLAS (SMU)-- Former Mustang volleyball player Charity Savedra returns to the Hilltop for her first season as an assistant coach under head coach Lisa Seifert, as announced Monday, June 2. Savedra was part of Seifert's inaugural team in 1996, and holds the distinction of being the first player in the history of SMU volleyball to earn all-conference honors.

"It's an honor to bring Charity back into the program," said Seifert. "She has accomplished a lot in her young career and is a proven coach. I know she is a self-starter and her loyalty, commitment and passion will be invaluable to our program. Needless to say, I am very happy about her coming back to the Hilltop."

Most recently, Savedra has served as the head volleyball coach at Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas, where she compiled an 81-10 (.890) record since 2006. In 2007, she guided the Frank Phillips squad to the best season in school history, finishing 42-3 and earning a fourth-place finish in the NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament. For her efforts, Savedra was named AVCA Southwest Region Coach of the Year. In her two years at Frank Phillips College, Savedra coached 11 Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) All-Conference players, seven Region V All-Region honorees, three WJCAC and Region V Players of the Year and five NJCAA All-Americans.

Prior to becoming the head coach at Frank Phillips, Savedra built the first women's varsity volleyball program at New Mexico Military Institute, where she led the Broncos to a 77-101 (.433) overall record from 2001-2006. While at NMMI, Savedra coached 14 WJCAC All-Conference players and seven Region V All-Region honorees.

Before landing her first college head coaching job, Savedra served as a coach for Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, Texas, where she coached from 1999 to 2001.

A native of New Mexico, Savedra lettered in volleyball, basketball and track in high school, becoming the first female athlete in her school's history to earn 12 varsity letters. She began her collegiate playing career at Seward County Community College (SCCC) in Liberal, Kansas. At SCCC, she again made school history by becoming the first freshman to be named first team All-Conference. She followed her standout freshman season by earning first team All-Conference and first team All-Region honors her sophomore year. She transferred to SMU her junior year, where she took a spot on the inaugural Mustang squad as a defensive specialist. Savedra was named team captain her senior year and became the first Mustang to earn all-conference honors, when she was named second-team All-Western Athletic Conference.

Savedra earned her bachelor's degree in Spanish from SMU in 1999 and her Masters of Human Performance and Sport from New Mexico Highlands University in 2008.
