Equestrian signs six to national letters-of-intent

DALLAS (SMU) --- SMU head coach Ashley Schaeffer announced on Wednesday that six riders signed national letters-of-intent to ride for the Mustangs beginning with the 2008-09 season. Schaeffer looks toward her second season on the Hilltop after signing Emily Gardner (Tallahassee, Fla.), Mallory Olson (Newport Coast, Calif.), Jordyn Pettersen (Fallbrook, Calif.), Jennifer Weeks (Los Angeles, Calif.), Lucy Needham (Naples, Fla.), and Claire Wenholz (Austin, Texas).

“This will be our strongest freshmen class at SMU and includes members from coast to coast,â€

do these kids get scholarships and if yes how much? With title IX do they measure the number of boy/girl scholarships or the monetary amount to figure out how to dole them out ?

I think the team practices over by TopGolf if any of you guys go there. I was on the way to topgolf from golf galaxy the other day and saw an "SMU EQUESTRIAN TEAM" sign hanging up

Was adding an equestrian team really necessary? Surely we could have added another women's sport that wasn't quite as elitist. Gotta be a cheap sport for SMU to host though

Equestrian is an NCAA emerging sport being pushed by the horse industry. Based on the schools participating it does not appear to be very elitest. I know it can be a rich kids activity but I know there are girls participating who come from middle class backgrounds who happen to just love horses.
