June 16, 2008

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU women's soccer coach Brent Erwin announced the completion of his 2008 staff with the hiring of assistant coach Derek Leader.

Leader comes to Dallas after spending more than 12 years as the women's head coach at the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

The University of Akron (Ohio) graduate also has coached the Bradenton Athletics, who play in the W-League of the United Soccer Leagues, for the last four years. He has been a member of the U.S. Soccer national instructional staff for five years, and spent 10 years as coach of the Region III ODP U-16 girls team.

"I'm very excited to have Derek join our staff here at SMU," Erwin said. "He is a proven head coach at the highest levels, with IMG Soccer Academy and the ODP program. Derek brings a wealth of experience to an already-outstanding staff here already with (assistant coaches) Kyle Mittendorf and Joe Waggoner, and he will be instrumental in helping us achieve our goals of winning Conference USA titles and competing for national championships."
