SMU Swimming Well-Represented at U.S. Olympic Trials
Twelve Current and Former SMU Swimmers Competing in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (SMU)-- At the U.S. Olympic Trials, reigning Conference USA Swimmer of the Year Jennifer Blackman swam her career best in the 400m free and alumna Corrie Clark made the semifinals in the 100m breast.

Blackman, a nine-time All-America honoree, touched in at 4:17.24, placing her 40th out of the field of 86. Only the top eight moved on to the finals.

Clark, who earned All-America honors in 2003 and 2005 for the Mustangs, is the current SMU record-holder in the 100-yard breast with a time of 1:00.74. At the trials, she swam the 100m breast in 1:09.56 to earn a spot in the semifinal heat. Her finish in the first heat placed her 13th, just two spots behind Amanda Beard. In the semis, Clark swam a time of 1:09.97, just over three seconds behind the heat leader, Rebecca Soni.

Devon Callaghan also competed in the 100m breast, posting a time of 1:12.84.

On the men's side, Nate Clark swam a 1:50.20 in the 200m free, placing him 31st of 82. In the 400m IM, Clark was on pace for a lifetime best, but was disqualified for a false start. He is expected to swim the 200m fly on July 1.

SMU alum Ian Clark competed in the 400 IM, taking ninth in the event with a time of 4:21.23. Only the top eight moved on to the finals.

Still expected to compete from SMU are Shane Milu in the 100m free and the 50m free, Brett Denham in the 100m fly, Maverick Smalley in the 200m IM and 400m IM and alumni Justin Smith in the 200 fly and Ian Clark in the 200 back. For the women, Jennifer Blackman will swim the 200m free and 100m free, Candace Blackman will swim the 200m free, 100m free and 50m free, Jennifer Basel will swim the 200m IM, Jaime Williamson will swim the 200m breast and Clark will compete in the 200m IM.

Thanks for the summary. SMU's Olympic history is best represented by our swimmers. Let the tradition conitnue.

Even if there aren't any Mustangs on the American team, I'll bet there will be more than a few Mustangs swimming in the Olympics from other countries. However, the American coaches need a Mustang to anchor the relays. We have never lost gold when a Mustang was the anchor.
