Martin, Wells Advance At Trans Amateur

SAN ANTONIO (SMU) - SMU senior Kate Ackerson qualified for the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur in exciting fashion on Monday, July 14, winning a playoff for the final spot in the tournament field. Playing at The Dominion, Ackerson carded a 77 for 18 holes before beating Texas Longhorn Kelley Louth on the first hole of a playoff to advance to the tournament, which will be played Aug. 4-10 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

The U.S. Women's Amateur, the third oldest of the USGA championships, was first played in 1895 at Meadowbrook Club in Hempstead, N.Y. The event is open to any female amateur who has a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4. The Women's Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

In other summer gold action, Mustangs Paige Martin and Liz Wells have advanced at the 78th Women's Trans Amateur Championship at Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas on Tuesday. The two will hit the course on July 16 for the match play portion of the tournament.
