Uh, oh. Now, if UNT can get a baseball program started, why can't SMU?

Proposed return of baseball program may start by 2010

For more than two decades baseball fans at UNT have had to travel to Arlington to enjoy a live game. For 21 years, UNT has not had a collegiate baseball program, since it was cut, along with men's soccer, in 1987.

But local fans of America's pastime may not have to wait much longer. Athletic Director Rick Villarreal said the athletic department has many objectives. While baseball is on that list, he said it isn't at the top, but building a program could start as early as 2010.

"I keep everything on my radar, but definitely the football stadium is what I wake up thinking about every morning," Villarreal said. "Once we secure the ability to start the football stadium and move forward, then my attention is probably going to turn to things like baseball."

What a coincidence. Football fans at UNT have to travel to see a real game too.

Do we drop soccer for baseball or swimming or tennis? Baseball is an expensive sport (field can only be used for that sport), a large number of scholarships, & travel based on number of games. The ability to be competitive in a state with a number of top programs would tend to drive us away from the sport. I would prefer us to try to compete at the highest levels with the current sports we have and not try to dilute the quality of our non-revenue sports.

Baseball is expensive, and it is NOT meant to be played with a metal bat.

We're great at soccer and swimming - do not ever drop either.

I bet we never see baseball again, and I couldn't care less what they do at North Texas State.

if you have a men's baseball team you'll need another women's sport team due to title 9. we can't afford it.
