WACO (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team opened the 2008 season with strong performance, blanking Baylor, 1-0, Saturday night in Waco in the preseason opener for each team.

Sophomore forward Lauren Shepherd scored the Mustangs' first goal in 2008. Freshman forward Logan May charged the Baylor goal on a breakaway midway through the first half, collected the rebound of her own shot and slotted the ball across to Shepherd, who buried her shot in the 26th minute to give the Ponies the only goal they would need.

"I thought we played very well," SMU head coach Brent Erwin said. "Lauren scored a nice goal, and our defense played very well."

In beating the Bears, who are coached by former SMU All-America Marci (Miller) Jobson, the Mustangs got a strong performance from their defense, who helped senior goalkeeper Ashley Gunter and freshman netminder Courtney Webb pitch the shutout.

"I was very pleased with the performance by our defense," Erwin said. "They really limited what Baylor was able to do, which helped us come away with a good result."
