Considering the extra emotion Cal gets when playing SMU, because its coach, Kevin Grimes, was an All-America at SMU, getting out of there with a draw is a great result.

Trivia time (with a question to which I do not know the answer): When was the last time SMU played two sports against teams coached by former SMU All-America players? (Cal coach Kevin Grimes was an All-America defender, and Kansas women's soccer head coach Mark Francis was an All-America midfielder at SMU.)

No. 7 Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw At No. 8 Cal
Paulo da Silva scores third goal

BERKELEY, CALIF. (SMU) - Forward Paulo da Silva scored his third goal in four games and goalkeeper Craig Hill made five saves to lead the SMU men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie against the Cal Bears at the Cal Legacy Classic in Berkeley, Calif. Sunday afternoon.

The Mustangs, who are ranked No. 7 in the current National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) poll, now are 3-0-1 on the season. The Bears, who are No. 8 in the NSCAA poll, also are 3-0-1.

After the teams battled to a scoreless draw at halftime, da Silva put the Ponies on the scoreboard with his third goal of the young season. Freshman Payton Hickey served a pass to da Silva, who headed it past Cal goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the 48th minute to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage. The Bears tied the game in the 82nd minute on a goal by A.J. Soares.

The Mustangs now return home to host their first game of the year when they host George Mason at 7:30 p.m. Friday and then host Oakland at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Prego's Express Italian Men's Soccer Invitational at Westcott Field.

Nice photo of Paulo da Silva.

Speaking of which, our man da Silva was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the topdrawersoccer.com National Team of the Week.

He's off to a great start.
