Fjortoft Runs Away From Field At A&M Invite
Sophomore Back To Dominating Ways

Sept. 20, 2008

College Station (SMU) - SMU sophomore Silje Fjortoft, the 2007 Regional Cross Country Athlete Of The Year, ran her first race of 2008 on Friday night, Sept. 19, at Texas A&M Invitational, and crushed the competition, finishing the 5,000-meter course in 16:33.03, more than 40 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Baylor claimed the women's team title, but SMU finished second and bettered 2007 C-USA Champion Rice, which placed third. Texas finished fourth.

The Mustangs got a top-10 finish from newcomer Monika Korra, who finished in 17:46.88, and top-20 efforts from Rachael Forish (12th/17:54.40), Samantha Means (17th/18:07.02) and Sierra Anderson (20th/18:14.43). Claire Hardwick (21st/18:16.59) and Jessa Simmons (24th/18:25.69) posted solid times and just missed scoring for SMU.

What I like is that the top seven times were in the top 25 places. Do that, and they will literally run away with the CUSA title.

I have no idea how you pronounce Silje Fjortoft's name, but that kid is a freakin' stud.

I think it is pronounced that same as the Duke BB coach's name.
