Mustang Diver Audra Egenolf Dives Into NCAAs

DALLAS (SMU)-SMU women's swimming and diving (1-0) beat out Arizona State (0-2) in a 142-99 win Thursday night in Joe Perkins Natatorium. The Mustangs took first in eight of 13 events, while ASU walked away with five top finishes.

To start off the night, ASU barely edged out the Mustangs in the 400 medley relay touching in at 3:49.24 to SMU's 3:49.51. In the loss, junior Justine Clark put in a strong finish in the free, almost catching All-American Sun Devil Jess Perazzo.

In the 1000, sophomore Maroua Mathlouthi broke out to an early lead and kept the pace clocking a first place finishing time of 10:17.04. Mathlouthi finished seven seconds ahead of second place Sun Devil Trudi Maree. Mustang senior Federica Felloni and sophomore Pia Lara Carrillo came in fourth and fifth respectively.

Senior Candace Blackman swam strong in the 200 free ending a full body length ahead of the pack. Blackman won handily with a time of 1:48.78.

In the 50 free, senior Petra Klosova won with a time of 23.59, narrowly beating sophomore teammate Elzanne Werth who touched in at 24.01. Sophomore Mustang Gabriela Soza finished sixth.

ASU's All-American Penelope Yamauchi swam away from the competition in the 200 IM taking first with a time of 2:03.69. SMU's junior Devon Callaghan took second touching in at 2:05.72. Clark and senior Jennifer Basel finished fourth and sixth respectively.

Freshman Denisa Smolenova pulled in second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.60, while freshman Christy-Leigh Lategan clocked in at 2:06.59 for fourth and Felloni finished fifth.

For the 100 free, Blackman won a thrilling race with a time of 50.65, while ASU tagged in second at 51.46. Sophomore Sascha Van den Branden followed in third with a time of 51.91 and Werth finished fourth at 52.06.

Klosova led the 200 back for the first 175 yards before finally succumbing to ASU's standout freshman Sasha Stevens at the finish, touching in at 2:02.70, while Stevens finished with a time of 2:02.55. Freshmen Mustangs Jessica Schauwecker and Jennifer Muhlheim finished fourth and fifth respectively.

At the start of the 500 free, Mathlouthi and Lategan broke away from the rest of the field early and maintained a safe distance to finish first and second with times of 5:02.43 and 5:06.09 respectively. Carrillo took sixth.

The Mustangs fell behind in the 200 breast, with Callaghan coming in second at 2:21.74, Basel coming in third at 2:23.66, and junior Jaime Williamson coming in fourth with a time of 2:23.87.

With the Mustangs cheering on their 400 free relay team, SMU coasted to the final win of the night touching in at 3:24.14. The win sealed an SMU meet victory over the Sun Devils.

On the springboard, sophomore Audra Egenolf turned in a big night as she posted NCAA qualifying scores in both the one-meter and three-meter events, with both scores being career bests. In the one-meter, Egenolf scored a 297.74 for the first place win, while junior Britney Yancey placed second with 240.75 points. Freshman Kelly Dietz came in fourth with 169.87 points.

In the three-meter, SMU went one, two, and three with Egenolf taking first with a score of 312.12. Yancey took second scoring 260.54, and Dietz put up 224.84.

The Mustangs return to the pool Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Joe Perkins Natatorium in the 15th annual SMU Classic. Competition includes Alabama, Arizona State, North Carolina, USC and Wisconsin.
